We are pleased to be trading all weekend as part of the Thames Festival.

From 12 noon - 10pm The Festival Market runs from Hungerford Bridge to Tower Bridge on the south bank, and within St Katharine Docks on the north bank, showcasing some of London’s best street food, arts and crafts.

We've been working away all week creating some really special one off pieces, so come down and see us and the rest of the festival. We are right outside the National Theatre so you can't miss us, and we are surrounded by a host of other great stalls so there's lots of treats to be had. Meanwhile Market this Tuesday

Part of the Meanwhile project, and packed with objects of interest, we are pleased to be part of this fair in a temporary pop up space in East London. The fair takes place at the meanwhile shop (3-5 Whitechapel Road E1) from 10.00 - 21.00 on Tuesday 19th April.

We will be there along side a great selection of other stalls taking part which include a local carpenter, vintage fashion, bunting, pop up cafe and The Tailor Gallery. It's the first market to take place in this temporary space and a great opportunity for people to come meet local trades people and artists as they show case their work.

An inspiring project I came across today.

Meanwhile is a philosophy, a policy and a programme of work.

“Curtsey while you’re thinking what to say, it saves time” – Alice Through the Looking Glass

As a philosophy Meanwhile is based on the belief that empty properties spoil town centres, destroy economic and social value, and waste resources that we cannot afford to leave idle. Vibrant interim uses led by local communities will benefit existing shops, as well as the wider town centre, through increased footfall, bringing life back to the high street and making better use of resources overall.

These views echo our thoughts here at uncommonly beautiful, and we would hope to get involved with meanwhile in the future. Seeing their space in Whitechapel was a definite highlight to the day. It allows anyone to get involved creatively and learn new skills, making use of things that are broken or in need of some TLC. With a variety of projects on offer, they make use of what was an abandoned building!

Another project to admire is Growing Place (E16, Canning Town, London)

The site in Canning Town has been offered by the Canning Town and Custom House Regeneration Programme as part of their regeneration strategy for vacant land. It will eventually become the new town centre when it is developed in 2012, but in the meantime it provides a space for fruit, vegetables, cultural events and workshops.

The How To: Project is run solely by Michael Arnold, a 19 year designer from the UK on his gap year. With the aim of teaching himself about design in the real world, the How To: Project brings limited screen-prints based around learning useful skills. Hand printed by the get a grip studio in Birmingham in editions of 30, each print bought goes towards printing the next design.

Wandering through the internet early this morning, I stumbled across this image and thought I should share it with you all. Two pieces by fabulous Japanese designer Limi Feu, I love the textural contrasts and monochrome palette...we may take inspiration from it when designing future collections.

She started her label in 2000 and showed her clothes at Tokyo Fashion Week between 2000 and 2007. A housing project with a difference

Just stumbled upon this stroke of ethical wonder by Dan Phillips and his company Phoenix Commotion.

This is a low-income housing project, created using salvage and scrap using items like cans, bones, picture frame corners, broken tiles, license plates and wine corks! Would love to see the place in real life the detail looks amazing. Another victory for sustainable design!

Spotted this while at Sziget festival over in Budapest- great city and great festival.

A hungarian designer had created this quirky musical ensemble made from discarded tins and miscellaneous rubbish, and combined with strings and bells. Each one had a solar panel with a bulb above it, as the bulbs trigger on and off an eerie yet beautiful sound....a little treat to stumble upon.

A trip to Berlin

My boyfriend and myself recently went on a trip to Berlin meeting potential stockists and checking for new materials for the brand. I was very taken with the industrial sense of the city. In every little corner there was something new to explore and sample, a must if you haven't been!

Anyway our hotel was a huge inspiration so i thought I would share it with you, it was built in an old factory building. Check out their website, its has amazing graphics, and beautiful little details and also great story telling. michelebergerhotel

This is the main room, just off the bar, its one big room divided by walls made from metal frames with lots of books slid into situ, a space considered with care and love.
I loved being in the space, it was hard to leave.
I think I may have to make an oversized recycled statement pendants made from different old magazines trapping in wire. Stunning.
A great use for old magazines!

This piece has been made from wood cut from a wine box. Hand sanded and printed onto. Its fastening method ties with the vintage ribbons which have a print on them . Available to buy in our online shop.

This wearable mixed media piece is made from wooden circles hand cut from a discarded chest of drawers abandoned in the street, and waste leather from a sofa manufacturer. The wood has been screen printed onto with a grey print design. All hand made with reconstructed broken jewellery. A true unique piece.

Uncommonly beautiful featured in the 'Fashioning the Future' catwalk at LCF

Fashioning the Future Nov 08 at London College of fashion.

We were lucky enough to be included in this event, the catwalk show featured sustainable outfits created by finalist from a competition run by the event alongside established ethical designers.

The event marked the beginning of the Summit where leading figures within the industry debated solutions to some of ethical fashion's most difficult and pressing problems regarding its future stability.

The image on the left is finalist Rachael Cassar's deconstructed collection.

The image on the right created by Sublime magazine features one of our red ribbon leather necklaces with other ethical brands featuring Fin, Junky Styling, Osklen, and Beyond Skin. This outfit was put together by Io Takemura a stylist from Sublime.

Emmeline and the Salvation Army have come together to launch London's most central ethical boutique, which is launching on the 9th October. With a Mad Hatters tea party and Alice in Wonderland fashion show from 6.30pm. The fashion show will take place in Hanover Square. For those making a night of it, there will be an after party in Soho with all the Mad Hatters Cocktails you can imagine!

London Printworks Trust will be hosting its annual deluxe sample sale, Brixton fRocks, in January 2008. This event has proved hugely successful in the two years it has been running, so will be returning in the New Year to chase away those post-Christmas blues and offer buyers fantastic bargains from many of the UK’s leading fashion, interior and accessory designers including Eley Kishimoto, Peter Jensen, Emma Cook, Linda Florence and Dawn Dupree.

London Printworks Trust is a registered charity which aims to promote contemporary and experimental printed textiles. It offers a range of services which combines textile print facilities, small scale production, reprographic facilities, exhibitions, educational activities and professional development. In a fast pace city ever moving, changing, shifting, with the need to succeed grow and develop we are forced to consume. We want too much, we own too much, we consume too much. I feel we have too many objects, things, cluttering up our world and heads desiring beauty and individuality.. In a response to this I attempt to slow us down,look around ourselves and open our own eyes. Value what materials and objects already exists. I regain, reuse, reinvent to tame some needs and desires. I construct uncommonly beautiful accessories from our unwanted waste: A three legged chair, a luggage suitcase, a'dated' dress and an odd button found in the street into thought provoking fashion accessories. I deconstruct these materials and reinvent then into new products. Using textile processes and finishings onto industrial materials like wood and vinyl forever contrasting with techniques and appearances. Inspired by traditional craft and driven by materials. Create modern precious embroideries.
